Kinetic Browser Instructions

Below are instructions that give more detail about all the features of kinetic browser. Many of which are not obvious.

Main page features

This is the main kinetic browser window. It is optimised for use with one hand; the controls are at the bottom as is the browser bar.
Going from the left the buttons:-

  • Switch: touch to quickly switch hands all controls and flicks are reversed.
  • Menu: options are history, add to favorites, share url, add to trusted (turns all 3rd party blocking off), add to block (blocks all requests even sub-frames).
  • Back: back one page. Note this can also done using a motion gesture:- The 'Use Y axis for back/forward' option in motion settings allows you to flick the webpage back with an upward motion.
  • Fwd: forward one page. Note this can also done using a motion gesture:- The 'Use Y axis for back/forward' option in motion settings allows you to flick the webpage forward with a downward motion.

  • Swipe: draw your thumb across this button to move the web panel down and/or to the side.
  • Carosel: touch the carosel to return to the carosel view where you can flick or swipe to navigate to other tabs.
  • Fav: touch to open the favorites, then you can either 'tilt to scroll quickly' or 'flick to scroll one item at a time' configurable. If you wait for a second the selected item turns red, then you can flick to the left or right to select a favorite or cancel this menu.
  • Setting: settings screen is where the kinetic browser can be configured. This where privacy / tracker filtering is set, search engine and customisable motion and gesture options are all configured. If you hold this then you can quickly turn motion off.

Disable blocking and reload

If the web page is not compatible with the tracker blocking features then you can press and hold the refresh button the following option comes up.

This will disable temporarily all the blocking on this page and subsequent pages in the stack. If you return backwards off the stack to the point prior to disabling blocking then the disable will be turned off.

Turn motion off

If you press and hold the settings button you can quickly turn off the motion sensor. This is for the occasions when you have ambient motion or orientation that may trigger gestures.

Tap counter

Tapping the blocking counter will open up the list of blocked sites. This can be used for information or if you tap any of the items you can then quickly add them to the trusted or the blocked list.

Options

Main

From the top:-

  • About: This contains version information.
  • Share: Used to pass on the good news that you have discovered this wonderful browser.
  • Privacy: A recap on the privacy settings.
  • Tutorial: You can reactivate the tutorials from here to learn / train yourself about how to use the motion gestures.
  • Select Theme: You can switch from a Light to a Dark theme.
  • Animation Speed: This governs how fast the screen flick animation moves.

    Search

  • Search Engine: When pressing the search button on the main screen the search engine used is configured here.

Cookies

Here you can select the cookie policy the available policies are.
  1. Always: all cookies for visited pages and third party frames will be accepted.
  2. Block 3rd party: cookies from the domain of the main / visited pages are accepted and cookies from any other domain will be blocked.
  3. Use whitelist: In this mode you will be asked to specifically whitelist / blacklist domains for accepting / blocking cookies.
    When using this option it will take some times to build up the list of allowed or blocked sites, but you can specifically maintain this list and have the best control.
  4. Never: This will always block every cookie. Please note a lot of web sites will not work with full cookie blocking.
  • Cookies Policies: When you have the Cookies set to whitelist in the cookies policy section, select this to examine the whitelist and blacklist with respect to cookies.
    You can manage these lists here.
  • Current Cookies List: Show a list of all the cookies that are currently stored, you can also individually delete them here.
  • Clear Cookies: Clears all the currently stored cookies.
  • Clear all cookies on close: Clears all the currently stored cookies when the application is closed.

Options page...

  • Trusted / Blocked sites: This is where you can manage trusted / blocked sites, you can move or remove domains.
  1. Trusted: These sites will disable blocking when being loaded or if a subframe will be excluded from blocking.
  2. Blocked: These sites will be blocked as sub frames.
  • Enable javascript: Allows you to turn javascript on or off.

Tracking

  • Do not track: Add the do not track flag to the header of web requests.
  • Block all 3rd party sites: When selecting block 3rd party all web requests for sub pages that are from a different domain to the one you have selected will be blocked.
    It is thru sub pages that web browsing is tracked this will not even make the page request. you can exclude pages from being blocked by adding them to the trusted sites list.
  • Stop nav to blocked sites: If you click on a link to a site that has been blocked as a sub page this will prevent direct navigation to it.

History

  • Clear history on close: Clear out the visited web page history at the specified time.
  • after delay of: Amount of time to wait before before clearing each item out.
  • Clear History: Clears all history.

Carosel

  • Close X location: The location of the close page 'X' in the carosel view to make it easy to reach with one's thumb. It can either be high or low.
  • Clear Carosel: Closes all the carosel pages.

Options page...

Gestures

  • Scroller: Slide, draw your finger down to scroll page up, Reverse slide, draw your finger down to scroll down, Off, turn slider off.
  • Scroll: Adjusts the sensitivity of the scrolling.
  • Which hand?: Switch hands, all controls and flicks are reversed.
  • Use Motion: Turn on accelerometers and motion gestures.
  • Motion: Access the motion options menu.

Thumb Grip

  • Thumb grip visible: Turns the thumb grip on / off. The thumb grip is a dark transparent panel at the edge of the screen that you can use to grip your device with one hand.
    The thumb grip can be used as a mousepad in mouse pad mode and also as a slide to scroll up and down... It has two sizes as explained below.

  • Thumb grip middle: Move the thumb grip to the middle of the screen this is useful for phablets and phones.
  • Size: Changes the grip size, small is useful for phablets and phones, large is better for tablets.

Errors

  • Errors: Shows the error information on the screen, with the option to send the stack trace to the support email address to improve Kinetic Browser (no private imformation is sent).
  • Enable send errors: In the event of a crash show the option to send the error information on restart.

Motion (options)

'Flick Moves Screen' mode

Motion

  • Motion Mode: Select the type of motion system you wish to use.
    Flick Moves Screen, when you flick the device the screen slides over.
    Tilt Moves Cursor, flick to activate cursor then tilt to move it around, flick to select.
    Finger pad, make the grip behave as a mouse pad with a double tap to select.
  • Show motion indicators: Shows motion indicators at the edges of the screen. These can be used to learn how to perfect the flick motions!

Web Flick Speed

  • X Flick Speed: Adjusts the sensitivity of the x (side to side) flick for the carosel and the screen mode.
  • Y Flick Speed: Adjusts the sensitivity of the y (up and down) flick for the carosel and the screen mode.
  • Z Flick Speed: Adjusts the sensitivity of the z (back and forth) flick for the carosel and the screen mode.
  • Swap Y and Z: Swaps the z and y axis on smaller devices it works better swapped.
  • Use Y axis for back / forward: When flicking up the web page navigates back. This is switched with z if the above option is set.

'Tilt Moves Cursor' mode

Carosel Flick Speed

  • X Flick Speed: Adjusts the sensitivity of the x (side to side) flick for the carosel.
  • Y Flick Speed: Adjusts the sensitivity of the y (up and down) flick for the carosel.
  • Z Flick Speed: Adjusts the sensitivity of the z (back and forth) flick for the carosel.
  • Use Y axis for back/forward: When flicking up the web page navigates back. This is switched with z if the above option is set.

Tilt Moves Cursor

  • Cursor: Controls the sensitivity of the cursor movement from the tilt action.
  • Cursor Scroll: Controls the sensitivity of the scroll when the cursor reaches the edge of the screen. Also from tilt action.
  • Scroll Mode Sensitivity: When in tilt mode there is a tap to scroll button on the large grip. When activated you can scroll by tilting the device.

'Finger pad' mode

Carosel Flick Speed

  • X Flick Speed: Adjusts the sensitivity of the x (side to side) flick for the carosel.
  • Y Flick Speed: Adjusts the sensitivity of the y (up and down) flick for the carosel.
  • Z Flick Speed: Adjusts the sensitivity of the z (back and forth) flick for the carosel.
  • Use Y axis for back / forward: When flicking up the web page navigates back. This is switched with z if the above option is set.

Finger Pad

  • Cursor Pan Speed: The grip has a panel that acts as a mouse pad, this setting controls the sensitivity of the cursor movement.
  • Cursor Scroll Speed: Controls the sensitivity of the scroll when the cursor reaches the edge of the screen.

List Navigation

  • List Mode: Configure the way in which the favorites list is navigated?
    Flick to select, when you flick backward / forwards the selected item increments up / down.
    Tilt to select, when you tilt the phone back or forth the selected item scroll up or down. Flick does as above.

Power Save

  • Power Mode: If you want to conserve as much power as possible and also avoid accidental flicks you can enable the power mode.
    Never sleep, default mode the motion detector is running all the time. (Unless you turn it off using a log press on settings.)
    Tap to wake, The motion detector turns off based on timeout and you tap the grip to turn it on again.
    Shake to wake, The motion detector switches into low power low sample mode, shake to switch it back on again.
  • Power Timeout: Time before the motion detector switches off, either 5, 10, 30, 60, 120 seconds.
